Sorenstam to retire after season (AP)

Annika Sorenstam, left, of Sweden., and her fiance Mike McGee, smile after Sorenstam announced that she will retire from the LPGA Tour at a press conference at the Sybase Classic golf tournament at Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, N.J., Tuesday, May 13, 2008. Sorenstam who began her professional career in 1992 will retire at the conclusion of the 2008 LPGA season.

Annika Sorenstam has few peers on the LPGA Tour after one of the brightest careers in golf. So when it came time to announce her retirement, she drew a parallel to a star in a different sport. Sorenstam recalled what Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre said when he called it quits in March. "One of the things he said was that he loved the competition but not the daily grind," she said.

Woods hopes to play Memorial in 2 weeks (AP)
Tiger Woods is chipping and putting again, and he hopes to play in the Memorial in two weeks. But even if he can't compete until the U.S. Open, he doesn't expect the same result as his last layoff during a season. Two years ago, Woods didn't play for nine weeks while coping with the death of his father.

Ochoa still wants to finish No. 1 (AP)

I want to win tournaments, I want to break records this year," Ochoa said Wednesday, a day after Sorenstam announced this would be her last season.

Annika to stay involved as tourney host (AP)

Sawgrass playoff raises some questions (AP)
Starting a sudden-death playoff on a par 3 is rare, but not unprecedented. It last happened on the PGA Tour eight years ago at the BellSouth Classic, when the playoff between Phil Mickelson and Gary Nicklaus began on the 16th hole because the rest of the course was covered with water. This time, tour officials purposely sought out a hole surrounded by water.

Wie won't take part in Sorenstam's event (AP)
Don't look for Michelle Wie at this year's Ginn Tribute hosted by Annika Sorenstam. Wie did not seek an exemption into the event she played a year ago, the tournament said. Last May, Wie, citing a wrist injury, withdrew after playing 16 holes of her opening round. Wie said she left because of her wrist and not because she was two-shots shy of the LPGA Tour's "88" rule.
